Ebook Miracles and Grace in an Unlikely Place read Online! Charisse Tyson is a Christian woman, married to a recovering alcoholic and she has owned the famed Johnny’s Bar & Grill in Hollister, California since January of 1996. When she purchased Johnny’s she had no idea of its historic significance. She did, however, know her husband Tommy was an alcoholic. Within three months of buying the bar he quit his well-paying job as a technician for a reputable corporation. It wasn’t long before he was drinking up a lot of the bar’s profits and his health and their relationship was deteriorating.
Charisse is a self-proclaimed, enabling, co-dependent. She has an A type Choleric personality, that while aiding her in her formative years contributed to her need to be in control. She referred to herself as a fixer. Her belief that she knew what people needed to do to improve their lives and her compulsion to share those views alienated those closest to her. Tommy would say she drove him to drink. In reflection Charisse admits that before God’s intervention, the way she responded to his alcoholism only contributed to the problem.
Brought up a Christian, Charisse neglected her spiritual roots for many years. She acquired her first job in the bar industry when she was only seventeen. She partied as hard as she worked, and as a single parent at seventeen she was no stranger to multiple jobs and a sixteen hour work day. The fact that she chose an alcoholic as a life partner is by no account surprising. Tommy needed fixing and she was the woman for the job.
In January of 2002 when Tommy asked Charisse for a divorce, it sent her into a tailspin that led her to Alanon and back to her Christian roots. She had been paying all of the bills, including her husband’s massive charge card debts, and was floored by his request. Despite being miserable in her marriage for many years the thought of it ending was more than she could swallow. Deep down, Charisse still loved her husband.
The God she knew but had forsaken spoke into her heart that beneath the sickness of alcoholism, Tommy was still the loving man she married. A Joyce Meyer video on co-dependency opened her eyes to the fact that she couldn’t blame all of her problems on her husband. After all, she knew he was an alcoholic and she bought a bar. Who couldn’t see the folly in that?
With her eyes opened to her culpability in the mess she found herself in, Charisse embarked on the painful journey of self-discovery that changed her life for the better. It was not an overnight transformation. The venture was wrought with difficulty, but she is victorious. Tommy and Charisse celebrated their twenty first wedding anniversary in July and he has enjoyed more than nine years of sobriety.
Charisse believes that God used Johnny’s Bar & Grill to transform their lives and continues to use their experiences to help others who find themselves in similar circumstances. The alcoholic - co-pendant relationship is sadly, not an uncommon one. Tom and Cat are grateful that owning the famed bar has allowed them to share the miracle of their triumph with countless people.
Charisse felt it was important to share the tales of their wilder times so that her readers could fully grasp how far she has come. Confessing to her many flaws was difficult but she believes it opened the door to the healing process. Her prayer is that it will do the same for others.
